Are you “Positive” it’s Day 4?

Yes, it sure is! Day 4 of “31 Days to Being Healthy & Happy,” and it’s the 2nd “P” – Positive Mindset.  In my step by step coaching program we work on 3 separate sections of this P:

1. Positive Mindset as a whole which includes thinking positively, affirmations, meditation, and language-ing.

2. The word Positive and how it relates to everything, and very specifically what I call “Food Moods.”  Essentially this is applying the “Garbage In – Garbage Out” philosophy to all aspects of your life.

3. The word Mindset which is part of your internal motivation to change your lifestyle and create new, healthier habits.

All three areas overlap a bit, however there are enough nuances about each one that I find it’s easier to grasp the concepts if they are separated. The challenge with this P is that it isn’t a fast and easy fix.  Many of us have a lifetime of mindsets that really aren’t serving us well when it comes to our health.

I’ve become an expert at sleuthing out these problems with my clients and you can learn many of these techniques in my book, Psyched to be Skinny: How to Stop Emotional Eating and Keep it off for Life.   I co-authored this book with Dr. Denise Wood, a doctor of Clinical Psychology. We discovered that many of our clients were struggling with similar issues and wanted to provide solutions that work, it’s not a “diet” book, it’s a lifestyle book.  We identified 10 different types of Emotional Eaters, like the Bored Eater, Anxious Eater, Situational Eater etc…and provide strategies and tools specific to each type of eater.  I’ve found that most people will identify with more than one eater but usually one or two will be more dominant.

Like any area of self-improvement the first step is to identify the problem or issue and through a series of steps you will gradually improve.  One of those steps includes a positive mindset.  My goal is that after people read my book is they don’t refer to themselves as an Emotional Eater anymore.  Let me explain – if you tell yourself over and over again, “Oh, gosh, I’m totally an emotional eater, I always eat when I get bored,” then you are confirming that to yourself over and over again.  On the other hand, if you identify that you tend to eat when you are bored, then move on from there.  You might say to yourself instead, “I am conquering my food moods and no longer choose food when I’m bored.”

While we’re talking about the Bored Eater, one of the most common types, I want to share one of my favorite tips for the Bored Eater: drink caffeine-free herbal tea through-out the day, especially at night.  Tea has a wonderful calming effect and there are so many options that can help you relax or improve your mood.  It will give you flavor, a feeling of fullness, but no calories, and best of all – No Guilt!  That way you can STAY POSITIVE about your choice to enjoy a cup of tea!

FYI – Psyched to be Skinny is available on Amazon as a paperback or Kindle!  I would love to hear your comments about the book!  You can email me at Susie@theSusieGarcia.com!
